Evaluation of Experiential Credit

During your admissions interview, we will explore your potential for earning experiential or life-learning credits. The purpose of this discussion is to identify areas from which you may earn credits toward your graduation requirements. This information will be helpful in targeting a realistic date for you to begin the ADVANCE program.

Evaluation of experiential credit must:

  • Document learning, not just experience or exposure.
  • Be evaluated as college-level learning by an assigned professor and the Prior Learning Assessment committee.
  • Not have resulted in any other college credit.

Portfolio (Credit for Prior Learning)

The portfolio is a compilation of the student's learning in the areas of academic, personal, and professional experience. Credit from the portfolio is generated in two ways:

  1. Credit for technical and professional training may be awarded if it is appropriate and applicable to the student's career and educational goals.
  2. Life-learning essays communicate to the faculty the kind and amount of learning the student has gained from specific life experiences. The assessment process determines the credits to be awarded.

The portfolio is prepared by students to describe and document their learning, including previous college work, equivalency tests, professional training, and personal and work experience. The student will work with the academic staff throughout the portfolio process.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

  1. OVU will accept for transfer credit the successful completion of CLEP general examinations.
  2. Students will not be allowed to count credit from a CLEP exam if they have already received credit for a class covering the same material.
  3. CLEP exams are now administered in the Institute office. Contact Eric Miller for further CLEP information.

Military Courses

Collect all relevant military information such as the DD214, DD215, DD295, military school certificates, etc. Veterans should submit DD Form 214 and service personnel on active duty should submit DD295 ("Application for the Evaluation of Education Experiences During Military Service"), certified by a military education officer.

Air Force personnel seeking vocational-certificate credits should submit a Community College of the Air Force transcript.

Credit: Military courses for which certificates have been received or which appear on the DD214 will be evaluated on the basis of recommendations from the American Council on Education's Guide to the Evaluation of Education Experiences in the Armed Services. Courses taken must match course descriptions in the above-mentioned guide. When possible, certificates for military courses completed should be included along with the DD214. Lower and/or upper division credit may be awarded.

To order a copy or certification of military service, write to:

General Services Administration; National Personnel Records Center; Military Personnel Records; 9700 Page Boulevard; St. Louis, MO 63132
